 Program DescriptionThe Court/Realtime Reporting program at Erie Community College is a certificate program for students who wish to pursue a career as court, freelance or realtime reporters. Students will learn the machine shorthand theory using state-of-the-art equipment and software. The program is intended to prepare students for transfer to SUNY Alfred State (online) or a similar educational institution to complete an A.A.S. degree in Court/Realtime Reporting. Specific courses will be offered in language arts and communication skills, computer word processing software, medical terminology and business law. Program CompetenciesUpon graduation with a certificate in Court/Realtime Reporting, the graduate will be able to: 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the computer and keyboarding equipment to produce and format documents for mailable copyTranscribe documents using machine shorthand at 90 words per minuteKeyboard at 30 net words per minuteDevelop grammar, punctuation and spelling skills essential for completing documents related to court reportingTranscribe letters, reports and other documents from various methods of input to produce mailable copy with appropriate grammar, punctuation and layoutDemonstrate an understanding of the communication process and its role in verbal and nonverbal interpersonal communications Special Admission Requirements/Prerequisites
    Applicants should have at least an 80 percent high school averageApplicants should have strong English skillsStudents will be required to purchase stenowriter machine and  software totaling approximately $1,800 at the start of the first  semesterSuggested daily practice time is 2-3 hours CurriculumTotal Certificate Credits: 32 |
